14 year old Lori Mattix lost her virginity to David Bowie. Steven Tyler, started dating a 16 year old girl and convinced her mother to give him guardianship over her, and then he impregnated and forced her to get an abortion. Elvis was known to have sleepovers with teenage girls, and started dating Priscilla when she was only 14 years old.

These "rock gods" knew what they were doing was wrong. How did they get away with it?

Show Notes:
*This is not an exact transcript, but rather an outline of my notes.

In this episode, I’m going to talk about baby groupies and rock stars who had relationships with underage girls.

“Baby Groupies” was a name given to young girls who frequented rock concerts and slept with band members. I’m talking like ages 13 and up. And it’s surprising that these rockstars are huge, super well known dudes and they got away with openly having these relationships, for the most part.

So, let’s talk about baby groupies and the inappropriate relationships that went on between teenaged girls and rock gods like David Bowie, Jimmy Page, guitarist from Led Zeppelin, and Steven Tyler (the lead singer of Aerosmith), to name a few.

Before anybody comes at me telling me to let these men rest in their graves or live their lives…. No. These men are pedophiles and I don’t think we should idolize them. I’ll admit, I’m a huge classic rock fan and I’ve been a fan of some of the guys on this list. But I don’t want to idolize these creeps. In the words of Bailey Sarian, “get better idols.”

And to be honest, the more I learn about them, the more I just can’t even enjoy their music. I really don’t get it when people say things like “I can separate the artist from the music” like that’s something to be proud of, but we can agree to disagree on that one.

So I’m sure it’s not a huge surprise that some rockstars had their share of sexual conquests with young, teenage girls. Somehow, most of these guys managed to get away with it.

So first I’m going to tell you about the two most famous baby groupies: Lori Mattix and Sable Starr.

Lori Mattix & Sable Star were well known among the rock stars. They were like 13 by the time people like Mick Jagger and David Bowie started noticing them.

They were friends in middle school and Sable Starr started hanging out at concerts and soon became known as “the Queen of the groupies.” Lori was in awe of her. When she was 14, she started hanging out at the clubs.

  • "Sable Starr lived to f--k rock stars. She was so glamorous, totally one-of-a-kind, wearing scarves for shirts and going topless without hesitation," she recalled.

Lorie Mattix

  • Lost her virginity to David Bowie at 14 (he was in his 20s)

  • “According to her, Bowie pursued her, but she initially rejected him.

  • "I had not yet turned 15 and he wanted to take me to his hotel room. I was still a virgin and terrified," Mattix claimed. "I had probably kissed boys by that point, but I wasn't ready for David Bowie."

  • Then, months later, she and fellow underage groupie Sable Starr ended up in a hotel room with Bowie, and the rock star took Maddox into a bathroom, got in a bath with her, and then had sex with her. The two would later have a threesome with Starr. It's worth noting that Maddox doesn't have any regrets about her experience with Bowie, noting that she would continue to see him on and off for 10 years after their first sexual encounter. “

  • Better known for her relationship with Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page (began when she was 14 and he was 28)

    • It nearly got Page arrested. When rumors got out that Jimmy Page was dating a freshman in high school, the FBI started an investigation and tried to get enough proof to charge him with statutory rape. Page and Maddox, though, managed to keep their relationship under wraps enough to avoid jail time.

  • Jimmy Page had band manager Richard Cole "kidnap" her.

    • "What happened is that I was kidnapped, literally," Maddox said once in a documentary. "He told me was going to be with me, and I said no, he wasn't, and he said, 'Yes, I am.' Then we all ended up at the Rainbow [Bar and Grill], and Richard Cole says to me, 'Get in the bloody car and if you move, I'll have your head.' Next thing you know, I'm at the [Hyatt House] hotel, and I'm walking down the hall, and next thing you know, I'm pulled into this door ... And I turned around and, look, there was Jimmy sitting in the corner of the room with a hat and a cane saying, 'I told you I'm gonna have you.'"

    • "He always left me with his security locked in the room. I wasn't really allowed to go very many places with him," she claimed.

  • Maddox walked in on him with another woman: Bebe Buell, better known today as Liv Tyler’s mother.

  • Mick Jagger-

    • "I remember being 17 and hanging out at the Record Plant in LA. I was friends with the owner and everybody recorded there. I saw three of the Beatles with Mick Jagger and Stevie Wonder having this great jam session. But then Mick started fighting with McCartney or Lennon over who would sing on a particular song. Mick got pissed off. He took me to one of the bondage-themed bedrooms that the studio had. Mick said, “Let’s go fuck and get high.” We did blow all night and talked and hung out until the morning. We tried to have sex all night, but, at a certain point, he couldn’t get hard anymore. We were both very high. Another time, Mick [had me] on a bathroom floor while Bianca was getting ready for surgery. The sex was very consensual."

Sable Starr

  • Iggy Pop- Iggy wrote a song, "Look Away," from the 1996 album Naughty Little Doggy, about their relationship. "I slept with Sable when she was 13 / Her parents were too rich to do anything / She walked her way around L.A. / Till a New York Doll carried her away." (Pop is about 10 years Sable's elder.)

  • (Starr moved to New York City to live with New York Dolls member Johnny Thunders at age 16, and their relationship ended in a torrent of abuse. "After I was with him, I just wasn't Sable Starr anymore. He really destroyed the Sable Starr thing. Se made me throw away all my diaries and all my phone numbers down the incinerator, and he ripped up my scrapbook," she says in Please Kill Me: the Uncensored Oral History of Punk.)

  • Thunders was a jealous, dangerous drug addict who would beat her senseless whenever he had a fit of paranoia. He got Starr pregnant and proposed, but realizing what her future would be, Starr snuck off, aborted the baby, and left the world of rock ‘n’ roll behind.

  • Known as queen of the groupies

    • Sable was only 12 years old when she lost her virginity to the guitarist of the band Spirit.

Steven Tyler (Aerosmith)

  • Julia Holcomb had just turned 16 when she met the Aerosmith singer at a concert in Portland, Oregon. He was 25. She had not lived a happy life before meeting him. Her father abandoned her mother early on, and her younger brother died in a car accident when she was 13.

  • She was in a fragile place when a 24-year-old woman befriended her, and pretty much groomed her into a groupie. She dressed her in revealing clothing, and got them backstage at an Aerosmith concert.

  • "I went to the concert hoping to meet Steven and after the concert, we met for the first time. At that time, I thought he was the best thing in my life. My sad, vulnerable story, as well as my youth and personal attractiveness, captured his interest," she wrote about meeting Tyler for the first time. She went to Boston with him soon after the concert.

  • Tyler then contacted Holcomb's mother and got her to sign over guardianship to him. Holcomb did not believe that her mother would sign over guardianship to him and remembered feeling vulnerable knowing she was his ward. "I asked him how he had got her to do it. He said, 'I told her I needed them for you to enroll in school'."

  • "I wanted children and began to believe he must truly love me since he had made himself my guardian and was asking to have children with me. He threw my birth control pills off the balcony of the hotel where we were staying, into the street far below," she wrote about the events that led to her planned pregnancy.

  • "Within a year, I became pregnant. I had never been pregnant before, contrary to what Steven has written," she wrote. By fall 1975, Tyler's ardor had cooled. He had backtracked out a marriage commitment after his father expressed concern about him marrying someone as young and immature as Holcomb. Tyler's grandmother was also skeptical about the marriage between the two.

  • Holcomb says she had no power at all in the unequal relationship at this point. "For the first time, I realized that I should not have been foolish enough to conceive a child outside of marriage with a man who might not be interested in a life-long relationship. His guardianship of me complicated things further. I was subordinate to him as in a parent relationship and felt I had little control over my life," she wrote about feeling betrayed after Tyler said he would not marry her despite impregnating her.

  • Fall of 1975-

    • "I was alone and pregnant in the apartment with no money, no education, no prenatal care, no driver’s license, and little food. Steven would call me every day to check in with me and I asked him for money to get groceries," she wrote of her situation. Tyler said he would send his friend Ray Tabano over the next day to take her shopping.

    • "I remember waiting by the window for Ray to arrive. He came to the apartment and I let him in through the front door. The next thing I remember was waking up in a cloud of dense smoke fighting for air to breathe. Ray was gone," she wrote.

    • Tyler, on his advice, would then pressure Holcomb, who had just survived a fire, to undergo an abortion. "He spent over an hour pressing me to go ahead and have the abortion. He said that I was too young to have a baby and it would have brain damage because I had been in the fire and taken drugs. I became very quiet and repeated the answer “No” more than once. I said I should not be asked to make that decision while still in the hospital. He said I had to have the abortion now. He said I was too far along to wait because it would be illegal for me to get an abortion in another week." she wrote. But her decision was still no. This is when Tyler threatened to abandon her and send her back to her mother's place to have the baby there.

    • Holcomb crumbled. "I believed he was abandoning me as my father and my mother had. I began to cry and agreed to have the abortion," she said. By that time, Tyler was already cheating on her with Bebe Buell, who became pregnant with Liv Tyler.

    • "Steven was already involved with other women at that time. The fact that he was my guardian complicated things for him because he was legally responsible for me. I was young, had dropped out of high school, and did not understand my legal rights at the time. I felt completely powerless. I left Steven in February 1977 and returned to live with my mother and stepfather. Steven called a few times after I returned home and then I never heard from him again."

    • Steven Tyler has spoken publicly about how witnessing the abortion messed him up, but he’s never acknowledged the pain and trauma he’s caused Julia.

Nugent couldn't legally marry 17-year-old Pele Massa in 1978, so he arranged with her parents to become her legal guardian. They would stay together for nine years, and Nugent would say that at the time he was "addicted to girls."

Bill Wyman (The Rolling Stones) and Mandy Smith

  • The two began a relationship when she was 13 and he was in his 30s, and it became sexual when she was 14. They married in 1989 to much fanfare, when Smith was 18, but just two years later would get divorced. In an added wrinkle, Wyman's son from his first wife ended up marrying Smith's mother.

Jerry Lee Lewis at 22 married his 13 year old cousin, Myra Gale Brown. She packed her belongings in the only thing she had-- her doll house.

Priscilla Presley, Elvis' wife, was just 14 when the couple met. The King's attention quickly overwhelmed her, and by age 17 she was living with Elvis in Graceland.

There’s a lot of disagreement about this. Priscilla did move in with him right away and she started hanging out with him at 14, but she has said herself that they didn’t have sex until she was 21, when they got married.

Supposedly, he actually withheld sex. She says that he thought she was too young and insisted on waiting.

Other sources say that he was obsessed with virginity and wanted to keep her virginity intact for as long as possible. It’s rumored, though, that on their first night together, they did other stuff and had sex in pretty much every way other than actual penetration.

According to an airman named Currie Grant, who introduced Elvis to Priscilla:

Presley soon had Priscilla 'backed up against the wall, kissing her'. At 8.30pm he took her up to his bedroom and they did not emerge again until 1.30am, when it was time for Grant to take her home.

  • "I was someone he created,' she told the Daily Mail in 2010. "I was just a kid and I was consumed by him. All I desired was not to disappoint him."

  • “I’ll give you Elvis’ relationship with Priscilla in a nutshell. You create a statue. And then you get tired of looking at it,” Fike told Nash.

  • Los Angeles, US: The King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley was a paedophile and had girlfriends as young as 14 while he was on tour aged 22, a book has claimed.

  • Author Joel Williamson has said Elvis kept a group of three 14-year-old girls with him on tour who were up "for pillow fights, tickling, kissing and cuddling", reports vice.com.

  • Priscilla arrived in Memphis to tell him she was no longer in love with him and was separating, he flew into a rage and raped her

  • 'He was fascinated with the idea of real young teenage girls,' said Lamar Fike, a former member of his entourage. 'It scared the hell out of all of us.'

  • Jackie Rowland, 14, whose mother Marguerite took her to see a Presley concert in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1956. They were thrilled to be invited backstage, but Marguerite became concerned when Presley took Jackie off to a sideroom.A few minutes later she opened the door to find Presley teaching her daughter to 'kiss in a grown-up way'. Unabashed, he asked Marguerite if he could take Jackie to a bar, promising to take good care of her, but she had seen enough.

  • Frances Forbes. She was 13 when she began hanging around the gates of Presley's home on Audubon Drive, in a fashionable suburb of Memphis.

  • 'He didn't pay any attention to me then, but when I was 14, he noticed me,' she said. 'Fourteen was a magical age with Elvis. It really was.'

  • Along with her friends Gloria Mowel and Heidi Heissen, both also at that 'magical' age, Frances was invited to private pyjama parties in Presley's bedroom.

  • During these sessions, he taught the girls how to put on eye make-up the way he liked it - heavy on the shadow and mascara. The evenings would continue with much tickling and kissing, which often went beyond friendly play-fighting.

  • One evening when he brought three young girls into Presley's bedroom. Soon they were all naked, but Presley stayed in his underwear, kissing and fondling them, and eventually falling asleep with his arms around them, as his records played in the background.
